SYMBOLIC ELEMENTS OF INFORMATION CULTURE: SPEECH AND LANGUAGE

Annotation

The article analyses the role of speech and language in the historical development of society. The author considers both notions in terms of legacy of the philosophy of Renaissance and Modern Time, in particular, works by T. Hobbes, J.-J. Rousseau, J. Locke and M. de Montaigne. The article specifies the main ambivalent functions of speech mentioned by T. Hobbes in his work: “Leviathan, or, the matter, forme, and power of a common wealth, ecclesiastical and civil”. Being a form of registering social experience and transferring information, speech is considered to be the way of fixing sensual signs for expressing ideas. Referring to speech, the author also touches upon the notion of language and claims the connection between the two. In this respect, the paper refers to the “Essay on the Origin of Language” by J.-J. Rousseau and specifies two key factors which contributed to the origin of languages: primary and moral needs of people. The author also emphasizes the relevance of “multipl
