TONAL AND COLORISTIC EMBODIMENT OF THE IMAGE OF NIGHT

Annotation

The authors analyze a number of paintings in which night landscapes are presented. Emphasis is placed on the signs and symbols of night discovered in works by the great artists (I. Ayvazovsky, D. Atkinson, K. Korovin, A. Kuindzhi, etc.). According to the paper, symbols allow understanding the world around as reveal this or that image, concept or idea; they are the synthesis of a sign and an image personifying experiences and idea common for many people. The symbolics of night is rather extensive and can be revealed in the national culture of different people in various ways. Both positive (silent, lunar) and negative symbolism of night are widespread. The article gives outline to the main techniques used in painting for creation of the night-like effect.
