Annotation

The author of the article treats learning not only as means of achievement something, but also as a goal in itself. This idea is exemplified by educational biography of the outstanding Russian scientist I.M. Sechenov. The valuable attitude to learning was the determining factor during all Sechenov’s life. He worked much, suffered many privations and inconveniences but was deeply committed to “his inner beliefs and call”. His research and educational interests changed; however, the great value of learning itself remained unchanged.
